INTERCLEAN IRELAND - ST. FRANCIS CHURCH, CORK

Interclean Ireland Case Study – St. Francis’ Church, Liberty Street, Cork.

Outer brick leaf moving away from supporting mass concrete wall, brickwork formed into panel and tied back in to supporting structure.

Client: Hegarty Construction Ltd.

Location: St. Francis’ Church, Liberty Street, Cork.

Problem 1:

Water was slowly wearing away the mortar bond between the brickwork and the concrete wall behind over the front gable. Due to this, the load from the brickwork was starting to bear down on the corbelled brick arch over the window below.

Cast concrete piers supporting the corbel projecting from the stone window had been suggested to support the weight.

Helifix Solution

• A scheme was drawn up by Helifix Engineers to provide stability to the brick façade.
• HeliBeams were installed in the brick skin spanning over the gable window.
• CemTies were installed through the brickwork providing a mechanical fixing to the supporting structure.
• CemTies were also installed through the brick corbel to provide additional strength.
• All works were re-pointed with historic mortar match and bricks were repaired to match the existing – there is no visual trace of the works.

Problem 2:

In the front towers there was extensive internal cracking of the mass concrete walls, some cracks up to 10mm in width. An internal universal beam steel frame with welded bolts chemically anchored to the walls was suggested as a possible remedial measure to arrest the cracking.

Helifix Solution

• Standard crack stitching detail installed at 450mm centre to centre along crack.
