Water Tower Conversion, Hertfordshire

  PROBLEM

Built in 1932, the water tower formerly served Shenley Hospital in Hertfordshire but this prominent local landmark had fallen into disuse following the hospital’s closure in 1990’s. During its conversion into luxury apartments, the 150ft listed water tower required the existing brickwork to be retained and reinforced to create lintels for new window openings on each of its 11 floors.

  SOLUTION

Stainless steel HeliBars were bonded, with HeliBond cementitious grout, into channelled out mortar beds above and below each new opening. These formed masonry beams that created new lintels using the existing brickwork.

The Helibeam System overcame the need to install expensive proprietary lintels, avoided the need to remove any bricks, caused minimal disturbance to the existing masonry and, on completion, was fully concealed.

The fast, non-disruptive, nature of the Helibeam installation enabled the openings to be created as part of a rapid rolling programme that dove-tailed with the window fitters, saving both time and money. The result is an impressive and eye-catching residential conversion.
